I love being outside during all seasons. But fall seems to trigger so many great memories: first days of school, football games (like the huge Battle at Bristol coming up in my hometown this weekend–Go Vols!), tailgates & leaf piles to name just a few. At home, our screened porch is where we pretty much live throughout the year (even in the coldest of times, when we build a fire). Lately I’ve been having some second thoughts about the sofa and chairs we have out here. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful porch and we’ve had some memorable dinner parties, champagne brunches & hanging-out-by-the-fire evenings on it. In fact, when friends & family come over, it’s their favorite place to congregate.
It’s just that the seating isn’t as plush as it could be. I want to be able to sink into the sofa with my book and a glass of wine, or maybe even take a nap & then watch the Tennessee game (since this photo was taken, we’ve added a much-needed tv above the mantel…and can’t you tell that’s my team from the pillow color?). Plus, how can anyone sitting in those two chairs watch tv?
For outdoor living, I think it’s important to make the space feel like a functional room. Bring your style from the inside to the outside, and really dress the room from all aspects. Now, I haven’t actually changed anything yet but I’ve been making a wish list; you know, drooling at lots of items I could put on the porch. A light bulb went off: why do I have to have uncomfortable, outdoor-looking furniture in a room I spend a considerable amount of time in that’s basically another inside room? It only took me 6 years of living here to realize the brilliancy of it! I’ve come up with some killer pieces from Arhaus that could really take my porch up several notches.
I’d start with this 3-piece sectional (click here for info). This one is their Huntington Outdoor in Dry Bark. It’s all-weather wicker so it could withstand some elements blowing in and the fabric by Sunbrella (this color is Sail Sailor), so the inevitable red wine and chocolate cookie stains would be easily removed. I love that this sofa is in 3 pieces, so that not only can it accommodate several people, it can be moved around the room as needed. Two people can also lie down on it!
I like to use an ottoman for a coffee table, especially if it’s large and completely flat like this one so you can set things on it (like a wine glass!). An outdoor rug is a must if you want to make it feel like a real room. I’ve got to have a throw even when we build a fire…check this one out; it looks so soft! Add some pillows…look at these! I love anything and everything cowhide related. These are right up my alley. If there’s room I would add an end table to the mix. When company comes, everyone needs a perch for their drink & food.
On to my favorite part: the accessories! I currently have a lamp on my porch and it’s on 24-7. I know, I know, that’s kind of a faux-pas but I love the ambiance it gives. And animal lover or not, you know these faux deer heads are everywhere so you might as well jump on the bandwagon for that hunting cabin feel. Baskets, bowls and candles are necessities of course. I mentioned earlier that we have a fireplace and build a fire frequently. But if you don’t, no worries! You can put a fire pit on your porch or in your yard and get the same effect. We have used one of those also and it’s amazing the amount of heat they generate.
It’s almost game time, so I’m going to head out to the porch. I hope you found some inspiration for your back patio this fall!
