We reopened our doors at House Dressing in a big way on November 9, by hosting DIY bloggers and New York Times best-selling authors John & Sherry Petersik of Young House Love! We’ve been following this witty married duo for years and knew they would be the perfect debut event for us…especially since they’re practically our neighbors over in Richmond, Virginia!
Sherry & John chronicle their home improvement adventures on the hit DIY blog Young House Love, which spawned two New York Times Best Selling books, Young House Love and Lovable, Livable Home, as well as product lines sold by Target, Home Depot, and more. They also have a podcast creatively named Young House Love Has A Podcast. And they have two young children and a feisty Chihuahua named Burger.
They could not have been more gracious! But first…a little background. House Dressing opened in April 2017 and planned to just consign ladies’ clothing and a few upscale furniture pieces. We hoped to only be open a few days a week until 3. What were we thinking? Quickly our little 1,000 square feet of space was filled with beautiful items from 80+ consignors! Over the summer we realized there wasn’t one scrap of room left for any type of furniture. We would have to expand if we wanted to carry it. We’ll detail the renovation in a different post but now we’re so excited to share our evening with YHL!
We had no idea how this first event would play out…would people buy tickets? As it turns out we were overwhelmed by the support. We had over 90 people in the “house” and it was spectacular!
This was an amazing opportunity to showcase our new store. Earlier in the day we had a ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce that really set the tone for the day!
Sherry & John arrived about 4:45, to a turquoise chalkboard welcome sign right in their parking space! We gave them a tour of House Dressing and then they spent one-on-one time with our staff.
Since this was our first event, we didn’t know what to expect! But the store was bustling with preparations! Food & drink (by esteemed caterer Catherine Elliott and her crew), dessert bar, swag bags, flowers and photographer Richard Mink were busy busy! Did I mention that we hadn’t really opened the doors of our new space until the first guest walked in? Tiny bit scary!
After photo ops and our own private book signing, we had to go about getting the audio/visual ready for their presentation. All the while the pair were down-to-earth as can be.
Soon guests started trickling (actually pouring) in. We even had a couple drive 8 hours from Maryland to meet our exciting speakers, thanks to a great shoutout on YHL’s podcast! We were so honored! The Maryland pair even came back the next day after having breakfast at a local diner.
Everyone had about an hour to meet and greet Sherry & John, take a photo with them, peruse (aka shop) the store, eat, drink & be merry! Champagne & wine were in abundance, as were the best bacon hors d’oeuvres, to name but a few goodies.
The cake and cookies with our logo were simply to die for! Petite Sweets captured our vision for the cake perfectly and Jessica Murthy of Batchcraft made beautiful logo cookies our guests could take home.
Luckily in a store like ours we have an abundance of sofas and chairs, so there was plenty of seating without us having to bring in too many extra chairs.
Sherry & John gave a presentation about their amazing journey from young, newly-married homeowners & DIY renovators, to casual bloggers whose goal was to just keep their family informed, to super-star bloggers, best-selling authors, product line designers (Home Depot, Target, Shades of Light) and now podcasters (and they’ve also produced a coloring book!). They’ve had quite a journey! Their talk was more like a “chat” and they peppered every minute with humor.
A lively q & a session followed, after which the swag bags were distributed. Everyone received a copy of YHL’s latest book, Lovable, Livable Home along with some House Dressing goodies like a tape measure and turquoise-dipped paint sticks.
One lucky winner would receive a $250 House Dressing gift certificate! My daughter, Janie, came up to the stage to draw and the winners were an excited Cheryl & Mark Weddell!
It was so special for me to have Janie there and I hope I can pass along a love of DIY to her. She’s been helping out in the store and at home, she certainly exhibits a love of crafts (if the drawings on her walls and bed are any indication!)!
Many chose to have their book signed by John & Sherry, who always carry their signature red Sharpie everywhere they go!
To say this was a thrilling night would be an understatement! Having so many friends, family and customers there was such an honor. To have YHL was a dream come true! We are so thankful. After the event, Sherry & John spent the night at the iconic Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, where I’m sure they had a wonderful experience!
If you haven’t read their books…pick them up! They are a wealth of information. Whether you want to learn how to hang drapes or tile a bathroom, they are your go-to source!
Thank you to all who supported us. We are just getting started! We plan to do monthly classes, workshops and events throughout the year!
Thanks for “shopping by” and remember, it doesn’t have to be new to be fabulous!
